SALT LAKE CITY - On the last day of the NLI signing period, the Utes received the commitment of German national Patrick Mayer. Mayer will join the Utes in the spring of 2014.
"I am very excited to add Patrick to our Ute family," said head coach F.D. Robbins. "He will have an immediate impact on our starting line up and will help us compete in the Pac-12 Conference."
Mayer, a native of Viernheim, Germany, is currently ranked 168 in the German singles ranking and reached as high as No. 21 in the German junior rankings.
"It feels great to be a Ute," said Mayer. "I chose the University of Utah for it's excellent academic and athletic program. I felt very comfortable with my teammates and coaches on my recruiting visit and was very impressed with all the facilities. I look forward to playing in the Pac-12 Conference with the Utes and I am sure that this is the best choice for me."
The 5'11″ Mayer started playing tennis at age 6 and has been coached by Jova Petkovic, Jose Antonio Fernandez and currently by Gerald Marzenell. He reached the quarterfinals in singles and doubles of the Zetes Open in Brussels, Belgium and the round of 16 of the ITF in Almere, the Netherlands.
In preparation for the spring semester with the Utes, Mayer will train for three months in Valencia, Spain.
