SALT LAKE CITY - Utah baseball signee Riley Ottesen has been named the 2013 Deseret News Mr. Baseball.
Ottesen went 17-2 in two years at American Fork HS, going 8-1 as a senior. He had 89 strikeouts with a 1.54 ERA this past season. Ottesen pitched a no-hitter against Lehi, striking out 13. At the plate, he hit .382 with 34 hits and 21 RBI. Ottesen will serve an LDS church mission before enrolling at Utah.
Other Utah signees earning all-state honors include a pair of 5A first-team selections from Riverton HS, Cam Gust and Jared White. Gust hit .329 with 17 RBI, and recently went 3-for-3 with two triples and a double in the Utah High School Baseball Coaches All-Star Game. White went 4-4 on the mound while hitting .430 with 37 RBI and a .796 slugging percentage. He also played in the high school all-star game.
Around the country, Tyler Viza (Desert Vista HS/Phoenix, Ariz.) was a second-team AzBCA Division I all-state pick and a second-team all-East Valley Tribune selection. He was named the MVP of the Arizona Baseball Coaches Association All-Star game. Viza went 6-5 with a 1.48 ERA, throwing five complete games.
Max Schuman (Arcadia HS/Scottsdale, Ariz.) was a first-team all-East Valley Tribune pick and was also named to the all-city team. He tied for the state lead with 12 home runs and had a 1.412 on-base-plus-slugging percentage. Schuman also played in the AzBCA all-star game, hitting a grand slam in the sixth inning.
Dylan Drachler was a first-team all-state selection at Spring Valley HS in Las Vegas. He went 2-4 on the mound with a 0.93 ERA in 45 1/3 innings pitched, striking out 62, and hit .469 with 21 RBI and two home runs.
Hunter Simmons (Saint Francis HS/Mountain View, Calif.) was a first-team all-West Catholic Athletic League pick.
Josh Rose (Granite Hills HS/Alpine Calif.) was a second-team all-league selection and was also named to the All-East County team.
