SALT LAKE CITY -

Senior Kim Turner, co-captain of the Utah volleyball team, has been named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America third team. She is Utah's first-ever All-American in volleyball.

"I'm happy for Kim, because she worked hard for this," Head Coach Beth Launiere said. "She made the decision to go after it and made it happen this year. Kim is an All-American in every aspect - she's a great player and made the players around her better."

"This is obviously big for our program, too, because Kim has set the standard for other Utah players to do the same," Launiere continued.

Turner, the Co-Mountain West Conference Player of the Year for the second year in a row, led the MWC in hitting percentage (.434) and points per game (5.61), and ranked second in kills (4.53) and blocks (1.47). During conference play, she had 231 kills, the top season total in conference matches in MWC history. In addition, her .434 season hitting percentage in conference play was good for third place all-time in the MWC.

Turner reached double-digit kills in 30 of 31 matches this season and had nine double-doubles and two triple-doubles on the year. The all-time MWC leader in both kills and blocks, Turner led Utah in blocks in 23 of 31 matches and in kills 16 times.

Turner ended her career ranked first in the Utah career record books in kills (1,620), total blocks (670), block assists (589) and hitting percentage (.324), third in block solos (81) and fourth in attempts (3,306). She posted at least one block in 127 of her 128 career matches, including 125 straight.

Each of the three AVCA All-America Teams is comprised of 12 athletes. The awards will be presented Dec. 19, 2003, at the AVCA All-America/Player of the Year Banquet at the Dallas Wyndham Anatole Hotel.

The selections are made by the AVCA Division I All-America Committee: chair - Janice Kruger, Maryland; Pi'i Aiu, Colorado; John Dunning, Stanford; Burt Fuller, Utah State; Judy Green, Alabama; Jill Hirschinger, New Hampshire; Nancy Mueller, South Florida; Pete Waite, Wisconsin.
