WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Eight University of Utah student-athletes were named to the Pac-12 Volleyball All-Academic Team, the conference office announced. Senior middle blocker Erin Redd-Brandon and junior libero Lea Adolph were first-team selections, while junior middle blockers Bailey Bateman and Alli Spurrier along with junior right-side hitter Shelby Dalton were second-team picks.
Senior outside hitter Morgan Odale, junior outside hitter Chelsey Schofield and sophomore setter Kendall Cygan each received honorable mention recognition. A two-time Pac-12 All-Conference Honorable Mention selection, Redd-Brandon was a second-team all-academic pick in 2011. She is second in the Pac-12 and 17th in NCAA with 1.41 blocks per set with a team-high .314 hitting percentage to go with 2.32 kills per set.
Adolph picked up the first all-academic honor of her career and owns a 2.64 dig-per-set average this season and leads Utah with 0.19 service aces per set. Bateman was a Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII Second Team selection and Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention in 2012. This season, she is sixth in the Pac-12 and 75th in the NCAA with 1.24 blocks per set and ninth in the league with 1.22 blocks per set in league play. She is averaging 1.55 kills per set on a .254 hitting percentage this season with five matches with 10 or more kills.
Spurrier was also a first-team all-Pac-12 Academic selection in 2012. This season, she is averaging 1.61 kills per set with a .207 hitting percentage. She hit a career-high 12 kills against Washington on Oct. 4 and turned in a season-high five blocks against Arizona on Oct. 27.
Cygan leads team with 5.56 assists per set and also has 1.82 digs per set. She has nine double-doubles this season and 12 over her career. Odale is averaging 2.30 kills per set on a .240 hitting efficiency with 2.78 digs per set this year, while posting 13 matches with 10 or more kills and 18 with 10 or more digs. She also has nine double-doubles. Schofield is registering 2.42 kills and 3.23 digs per set in 2013 with 13 double-doubles, 15 matches with 10 or more kills and 24 with double-digits in digs.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.0 and be either a starter or significant contributor.
Utah finished the regular season 20-12 overall with a 9-11 mark in Pac-12 play and will face Yale in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Fri., Dec. 6 in University Park, Pa. First serve from Rec Hall is set for 5 p.m. ET with live video at gopsusports.com.
