Utah ends its 2007 regular season at home against a pair of Mountain West Conference foes in No. 25 UNLV on Friday, Nov. 16 and San Diego State on Saturday, Nov. 17.
The Week In Review
Despite a .264 team hitting percentage and close scores in all three games, the Utah women's volleyball team fell to BYU, 3-0 (30-27, 30-27, 30-25), in Provo for the second Deseret First Duel volleyball contest of the season.
Whitney Webb led the Utes with 13 kills on the night, while Lori Baird was also in double figures with 11 kills. She had a team-best .360 hitting percentage. Kathryn Haynie tallied nine kills and two aces with 10 digs.
UNLV moved into the AVCA rankings two weeks ago at No. 25, and remain there this week. The Rebels are 21-3 n the season and lead the conference with a 12-2 record.
Lauren Miramontes leads the team with 4.52 kills per game, a .307 hitting percentage and 1.13 blocks per game. Maria Aladjova has also been a solid offensive player with 4.46 kills per game.
Jada Walker leads a solid defense with 5.60 digs per game. Also solid on the back row is Camille Cunningham, who has 3.22 digs per game and leads the team with 24 aces.
Melody Nuna serves as the setter and averages 13.32 assists per game.
UNLV defeated Utah in their first meeting this season, 3-1. However, the Utes hold the edge in the all-time series, 23-2.
Scouting San Diego State
San Diego State is 12-13 on the season, 4-10 in the MWC. However, one of those four victories was a 3-1 upset win over the Utes earlier this year.
Lindsey Mahan leads the Aztecs with 2.81 kills per game while Lauren Salisbury has 2.60 kills per game. Salisbury also leads the team with 1.30 blocks per game. Hannah Evans has 24 aces on the year, while Kristen Castillo and Leah Lathrop share the setting duties, each pulling in over five assists per game..
The two teams are tied in the all-time series, 18-18.
Against the Best
UNLV marks the seventh team this season that Utah has played in the AVCA top 25 poll. Utah defeated No. 17 Purdue (3-2) and played competitive matches against No. 4 USC, No. 5 UCLA, No. 6 Florida and No. 22 New Mexico State, losing several games in each match by just a few points. In addition, the Utes fell to Dayton, 3-2, which moved into the rankings after playing Utah. Colorado State was ranked at No. 21 during the second meeting between the two teams this year while BYU has also been ranked this season.
Utah is second in the MWC in opponent hitting percentage. The Utes are holding opponents to just a .176 hitting percentage. Utah has held opponents below .100 three times, holding Dayton (8/31) to .080, Air Force (9/28 and 10/27) to .008 and .071, respectively, and Utah Valley (10/23) to .067.
Senior Lori Baird leads the Utes in blocking, averaging 1.54 blocks per game, which ranks second in the MWC and 15th in the country. She was named MWC Co-Player of the Week on Oct. 29.
