On the Block: In the latest statistical rankings released by the Pac-12, Utah was second in the conference with 2.89 blocks per set. The Utes are ranked ninth in the latest NCAA statistics. Utah has outblocked its opponents 12 times in 14 matches this season, but Sunday's match against USC was the Utes' first loss in that scenario in 2013.
Blocking Bad: Junior middle blocker Bailey Bateman (Hooper, Utah) registered a team-high mark of 1.38 blocks per set as she pulled down 10 block assists and one block solo in the first two matches of Pac-12 play. Bateman also carried a 1.75 block-per-set average on a .278 hitting percentage against the Buffaloes and Trojans. In Tuesday's Pac-12 opener against Colorado, Bateman had 11 kills on a team-high.375 hitting percentage against the Buffaloes to go with a match-high seven blocks.
Driving Dalton: Junior right-side hitter Shelby Dalton (Moab, Utah) paced the Ute attack with 2.62 kills per set on a .328 hitting percentage during the opening week of Pac-12 competition. She connected for a total of 21 kills on 58 attempts with just two errors to go with 6.0 blocks (0.75 per set). Dalton tallied 11 kills on 36 swings with just one error for a .278 mark to go along with four blocks during the Sept. 24 3-2 win over Colorado in the Pac-12 opener. Dalton posted a team-high 10 kills Sunday against No.4 USC on 22 attempts with only one error for a .409 hitting percentage in what turned out to be her fourth consecutive double-digit-kill match and her eighth this season.
Redd-Brandon For the Block: Senior middle blocker Erin Redd-Brandon (Spanish Fork, Utah) had eight kills on a .294 efficiency with six digs and four blocks on Tuesday against Colorado, followed up by a six-kill, four-block performance against No. 4 USC on Sunday. This season, Redd-Brandon is second in the Pac-12 and 12th in the NCAA with 1.44 blocks per set, while hitting for a team-high .331 efficiency with 2.16 kills per set. Redd-Brandon has five double-digit-kill performances this season and has had 10 or more blocks during two matches in 2013.
Mak Strong: Junior outside hitter Makenzie Moea'i (American Fork, Utah) registered her second-straight double-figure-kill match with 11 kills on 25 swings Tuesday against Colorado with just four errors for a .280 efficiency to go with three blocks. She is turning in 2.23 kills, 0.58 digs, 0.55 blocks and 0.08 aces per set and is hitting .278 through 13 matches this season. Moea'i has five double-figure kill outings this season and one double-double and one double-digit-dig effort in 2013.
