SALT LAKE CITY - In preparation for its Pac-12 Conference home opener against No. 7 Stanford in the Jon M. Huntsman Center on Sept. 21, the University of Utah volleyball team began practicing on the JHC floor Tuesday afternoon.
"It was fun to practice in the Huntsman Center," head coach Beth Launiere said. "It's always nice to get a change of environment and the team is excited."
Take a look at some of the action from practice in the photo gallery.
Utah's last match in the Huntsman Center was against BYU on Oct. 1, 1993, so an adjustment period was expected by both the coaching staff and the players.
"There were a few times today when the ball was dug up high and we lost it a little bit so there's definitely a different depth perception," Launiere said. "The balls can go higher in here than in Crimson Court so it's nice to have a chance to practice in here a couple of times."
"Practice went well today," sophomore middle blocker Bailey Bateman said. "It's nice to get used to a big arena because that's what most of our Pac-12 opponents play in. We haven't played [in the Huntsman Center] for a while so it was good to get back in here and have a good practice."
The Utes will also practice in the Huntsman Center tomorrow (Sept. 12) as well as next Monday (Sept. 17) and Thursday (Sept. 20).
"It's good to change up our routine and do something different," Bateman said. "It will be nice to have the big crowd in the Huntsman Center on Sept. 21 surrounding us and cheering us on. The energy of playing in a big arena is going to fuel us."
The Stanford match on Sept. 21 will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks. This week, the Utes host the Utah Classic and will play a doubleheader on Friday against Cal Poly (12 p.m. MT) and Nevada (7 p.m. MT).
