Yale Invitational Review: The Utes and Bulldogs both went 2-1 last weekend at the Yale Invitational with Utah taking the crown after the head-to-head tiebreaker with the win at Yale, its first road contest of the season. Utah defeated Colgate in three sets last Friday (25-13, 25-16, 26-24) in its first match at Yale, then lost in to Boston College (20-25, 25-10, 22-25, 21-25) in Saturday's first match. In what turned out to be the Yale Invite championship match, Utah beat the Bulldogs in four sets (25-19, 28-30, 25-20, 25-22).
Getting Defensive: Utah held a significant advantage in both hitting and blocking over the weekend. The Utes managed to hit at a .290 clip, while holding their opponents to .171. Utah also held a significant advantage in team blocks, turning in a 2.82 block-per-set average while its opponents managed only 1.00 block per set during the tournament. The Ute have held five of their first six opponents to .200 or below on the attack this season.
MVP! MVP! MVP!: After helping the Utes to the 2011 Yale Invitational title with a 2-1 record over the weekend, including wins against Colgate and host Yale in the championship match, Odale was named the Co-Most Valuable Player. Odale posted a team-high 4.27 kills-per-set average during the tournament and turned in a .296 hitting percentage with only 10 errors on 125 attack attempts. She pounded a career-high 23 kills against Yale on 53 attempts with only four errors for a .358 efficiency and then secured her first double-double performance of the season with a career-high-tying 18 digs.
Scouting Eastern Michigan:
Utah has won each of the previous two matchups with EMU. The Utes won a neutral-site contest on Sept. 1, 2000 in three sets then need four sets to win a Nov. 29, 2003 meeting at Crimson Court.
The Eagles have won seven straight matches and have only lost three sets during that stretch, taking 20-of-23 sets.
Eastern went 3-0 and won the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational last weekend in Indianapolis.
Rachel Iaquaniello was named tournament MVP.
EMU beat Youngstown State in four sets on Tuesday.
