WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Senior middle blocker Erin Redd-Brandon has been named the Pac-12 Conference Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. Redd-Brandon is the first Ute volleyball player to ever earn a weekly award from the Pac-12.
Redd-Brandon picked up the first weekly award of her career after finishing the opening weekend of the season with a team-high 1.69 blocks per set, which included 22 block assists, to lead the Ute defense at the net on the way to a 3-0 record and a Utah Classic title. The Spanish Fork, Utah native was named to the Utah Classic All-Tournament Team after averaging 2.46 kills per set on a .287 hitting percentage on the attack for the Utes.
Redd-Brandon came up one block shy of tying her career high as part of her fourth career double-double to lead Utah to a five-set victory over Utah State last Friday. She led the way with a match-high 12 blocks, which was just one block shy of tying her career-best (13 at Utah State on Aug. 24, 2012) and also converted 11 kills with four errors on 30 attempts.
She added four blocks at the net to go with nine kills and just two miscues on 24 attempts for a .292 efficiency in the Utah Classic title-clinching victory over Northern Iowa on Saturday night.
Redd-Brandon also became the 10th member of Utah's 400-block club. She has 413 career blocks (300 blocks assists and 23 block solos). She is already fifth in Utah's top-10 list in all-time career total blocks list with 390 career blocks assists and stands 26 shy of tying Teresa McCabe (439 from 1991-94) for eighth place in school history.
Redd-Brandon is the first Utah volleyball player to receive weekly recognition since Danielle Killpack was named Mountain West Conference Player of the Week on Nov. 29, 2010. Killpack averaged 3.86 kills, 1.86 blocks and 4.79 points per set, while hitting .659 (27-0-41) over seven sets in the two wins at then-No. 14 Colorado State and Wyoming to finish the season.
Utah hits the road for the first time next weekend as the Utes head to Denton, Texas for the North Texas Tournament. Utah opens up against Texas State at 2:30 p.m. CT and host North Texas at 7:30 p.m. CT on Friday. Saturday's action begins against Prairie View A&M at 1 p.m. CT before facing Northwestern State at 5 p.m. CT.
