SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's volleyball team is picked to finish third in the Mountain West Conference preseason poll.

The MWC conducted the voting that consisted of the eight head coaches and select media representatives.

Defending champions Colorado State earned top billing with 118 points. The Rams received all but one of the 15 first-place votes.

BYU, with its 100 points, narrowly edged out the Utes and their 97 points for second. Utah was the only other program to receive a first-place vote.

Rounding out the rest of the poll is San Diego State (65 points), Wyoming (59), UNLV (40), New Mexico (33) and Air Force (28).

Shelly Sommerfeldt was the only Ute highlighted on the preseason all-conference squad. The junior outside hitter finished the 2003 campaign with all-conference honors, ranking seventh in the MWC in kills-per-game (3.64).

Earlier this week, the Utes earned a spot in the top 25 of the USA Today/CSTV preseason coaches poll. Utah checked in at No. 24 while fellow conference rival Colorado State came in at No. 11. BYU was on the edge of the rankings, garnering 58 points.

Preseason favorite and No. 11-ranked CSU comes to town on Saturday, Nov. 13. Match time at Crimson Court is slated for 7 p.m. Instate rival BYU comes to town on Saturday, Oct. 23. Start time against the Cougars has yet to be determined.

The 2004 Utes Volleyball team will take the court for the first time at its Alumni Match/Meet the Team event on Friday, Aug. 27. The festivities at Crimson Court begin at 7 p.m. The regular season will start when Utah Valley State comes to town on Sept. 1. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
