SALT LAKE CITY --- The number 13 was more elusive than unlucky as the University of Utah volleyball team (18-7, 10-4 Mountain West) saw its home winning streak halted at 12 with a 3-1 loss to conference rival Colorado State (16-7, 9-4 MWC) here tonight.

Game scores were 30-24, 30-28, 32-34 and 30-21. Colorado State is the only team to win at Crimson Court this season while the loss also ended the Utes' seven-match winning streak.

"They played a much better match than we did tonight," head coach Beth Launiere said. "We didn't pass well, block well or attack well. Aside from game three, they never let us in the match and that's a credit to how well they played tonight."

The Rams contained the Utes, holding them to just .132 hitting. Utah never hit better than .205 for the match and ended it hitting a meager .054 in game four alone. Utah rallied to win game three in extra points, but the Rams battled back to record nine of their 18.5 team blocks in the final frame.

Shelly Sommerfeldt and Whitney Webb led the Utes in hitting. Both had a team-best 16 kills but Webb paced all hitters, racking kills up at a .364 clip. Airial Salvo's eight kills were next best for the Utes.

The attack ran through Shannon Krug as she handed out 46 assists. She also added five kills and three total blocks to the effort tonight.

The Rams held the edge defensively, out-blocking (18-11.5) and out-digging (73-54) the Utes. Emillie Toone and Sommerfeldt paced the Utes with five total blocks each while Sommerfeldt tallied a double-double with a team-best 15 digs.

The Rams finished hitting .212 for the match and came out on fire, hitting .353 in game one. Casey Bauer's 21 kills led all players as did Ashley Fornstrom's 59 assists. Bauer was one of five Ram hitters to collect double-digit kills on the evening. On defense, Dre Downs' nine total blocks paced all spikers while Katherine Whitney recorded 27 digs.

The Utes bid farewell as three of their seniors played in their last regular season home match. Sommerfeldt and classmates Danielle Leichliter and Katie Theurer were honored before the match for the dedication and effort over the years.

Utah finishes the regular season on the road as it plays at UNLV and San Diego next weekend, Nov. 18-19. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. (PST).
