SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah volleyball team came out on fire as it nabbed the 3-1 Mountain West Conference win over the Air Force Academy here tonight.
The Utes came out hitting .471 over the first two sets en route to the four-game win. Game scores were 30-14, 30-16, 27-30 and 30-21. Utah improves to 13-6 overall and to 5-3 in loop action. The Falcons stumble to 4-18 and remain winless in the league at 0-8.
"It was a productive weekend for us," said head coach Beth Launiere. "I think we've solidified our starting lineup and are starting to pass and play as well as have all season.
"The team has really come together and we had a good week of practice coming into the matches this weekend. I think if we have another good week, we'll be ready to compete and make a run to the top of the conference."
Utah checked in hitting .333 for the match tonight, holding its rivals to a meager .129. Shelly Sommerfeldt and Lori Baird led the way for Utah with 10 kills each. But, Whitney Webb was one of the top hitters, collecting kills at a .600 clip. She racked up nine kills on 15 swings with no errors.
Shannon Krug had a nice all-around match as she had five kills, eight digs and one block to go along with her match-high 47 set assists.
Utah held the slimmest of margins at the net, 7.5-7, and was led by Emillie Toone, Airial Salvo and Baird in blocks. All of them had three total blocks. Danielle Leichliter's 17 digs led all players from the back row.
Utah was able to cruise to wins in games one and two as it hit .513 in game one and .414 in the second stanza. The Utes registered only five total errors on 68 swings during that span.
Utah's offense returned to form as it hit .324 in the final frame and led from start to finish to bag the win.
The win marked the seventh straight home victory this season. Utah is a perfect 7-0 on its home court thus far.
The Falcons' Brooke Akers led all players with 12 kills while Carly Siefken had a team-best 25 assists. Defensively, Rebecca Gallegos was tops with 12 digs while Briana Thomas led with three total blocks.
The Utes return to action next weekend when they host San Diego State and UNLV. The Aztecs invade Crimson Court on Friday, Oct. 21, while the Rebels visit on Saturday, Oct. 22. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
