BERKELEY, Calif. - Four Utes hit double-digits in kills and three registered double-doubles as the University of Utah volleyball team defeated California, 3-1 (25-23, 17-25, 25-20, 25-16) in a Pac-12 Conference match on Sunday evening at Haas Pavilion.
Utah (14-4, 3-3 Pac-12) picked up its fifth Pac-12 road win since 2011:
1. 3-0 at Colorado on Sept. 13, 2011
2. 3-1 at Washington State on Oct. 7, 2011
3. 3-2 at Oregon on Oct. 28, 2011
4. 3-1 at Arizona State on Nov. 16, 2012
The Utes earned a .264 to .192 advantage in team hitting, while compiling a 13.0-8.0 edge in team blocks during the match. Three Utes hit double-figures kills and two recorded double-doubles
Junior right-side hitter Shelby Dalton posted a team-high 13 kills on a .267 hitting percentage to go with six blocks. This was her seventh double-digit-kill performance in Utah's last eight contests and she now has 11 such performances this season and 19 over her career.
Schofield turned in her fifth double-double in 2013 and the 25th of her career with 11 kills and a team-high 16 digs. The Provo, Utah native now has seven matches with 10 or more kills this year and 46 for her career. She has registered 12 double-digit-dig effort this season and 41 during her Ute career.
Senior middle blocker Erin Redd-Brandon turned in a team-high .500 hitting percentage with 11 kills on 20 swings and only error. She also had five blocks to improve her career total to 490 (464 block assists and 26 block solos).The Spanish Fork, Utah native is fourth in school history in total blocks and nine away from moving into fifth.
Senior outside hitter Morgan Odale registered 11 digs and 10 kills for her fifth double-double of 2013 and 26th of Ute career.
Sophomore setter Kendall Cygan dished out 30 assists to go with 11 digs for her fifth double-double of the season and the eighth of her career. Junior Kalee Kirby distributed 16 assists and also added six digs.
The Utes claimed the first six points of the opener and led by as many as seven (8-1) before the Bears tied the set for the first time (12-12) with an 11-4 spurt. The set would be tied two more times (14-14) and Cal would grab its first lead at 15-14 before going on to an 18-15 advantage. Utah clawed back to even the set for the fourth time at 21 all and the frame would be tied two more times (22 and 23) before two blocks by Redd-Brandon and junior right-side hitter Alli Spurrier clinched the set in favor of the Utes, 25-23. Utah outhit Cal, .209-.146, and earned a 5.0-2.0 advantage in team blocks over the Bears. Dalton hit .417 for six kills to go with three blocks, while Odale turned up six digs and Cygan handed out nine assists.
Utah took three of the first four points in the second frame as Cal would knot the set for the first time at four points apiece and the Golden Bears would grab a 6-4 lead after launching a 5-1 run. The Utes would stay within two (13-11) until the Bears were able to extend their lead on the way to a 25-17 second-set victory. Odale had six kills on 12 attempts and just one error for a .375 efficiency in the second frame alone.
The third set was knotted three times, the final time coming at 6-6, before Utah was able to wedge out to an 11-6 advantage via a 5-0 run and led by as many as six on four occasions, the last being 20-14, before extending out to a 22-15 advantage.
The Utes benefited from another fast start as they earned a 4-0 edge to start the fourth frame and Utah eventually worked its way to a seven-point lead (14-7). Cal put together a 4-0 run of its own to cut its deficit to three points (14-11), but Utah withstood the rally and regained an eight-point lead at 21-13 after a 7-2 spurt on the way to
California (10-5, 3-3 Pac-12) was led by 20 kills and seven digs from Adrienne Gehan.
