SALT LAKE CITY - Whitney Webb tallied a career-high 22 points as the Utah lost a hard-nosed five-game match, 3-2, against rival Brigham Young on Friday, Oct. 12 on Crimson Court.
Down 2-1 in the match, the Utes rallied back to win game four, 30-26, before falling in the fifth game, 15-7.
The match marked the inaugural Deseret First Duel contest, a rivalry series between Utah and BYU in the 12 sports they compete in head-to-head during regular-season play. Tonight's match was worth three points of the 64-point total, giving BYU a 3-0 lead.
In game one, Utah held as much as a four-point lead twice during the match, but the Cougars were able to rally to tie the game after each Ute lead. With the score tied 23-23, Utah took a timeout to regroup and came back to the court to score four-straight kills, including two from Webb for a 27-23 lead en route to a 30-25 first-game win.
Although Utah was up by as many as five points in game two, 16-11, BYU cut away at the lead to tie the game, 22-22. With the match tied 24-24, the Cougars scored six-straight points, including a kill and a block by Erica Lott, to tie the match at 1-1 with a 30-24 win.
With BYU up 17-16 in game four after 10 ties in the early points, the Cougars went on a 4-0 drive to take control of the game, 21-16. BYU would pull away from there to win 30-23.
In game four with the score knotted at 25-25, Utah outscored BYU 5-1 through the remainder of the contest to take a 30-26 win. Bartkowiak and Baird each had two kills in the final drive for Utah. The score was tied 15 times in the fourth game.
"We fought hard and battled tonight," head coach Beth Launiere said. "We were down in game four and battled back. I thought we passed pretty well tonight, but we have to get better offensively. We have to get everyone stepping up their game."
Chelsea Goodman led BYU with a triple-double, tallying 21 kills, 11 digs and 12 blocks. Ashton Hansen had 11 kills and 13 blocks while Lott tallied 10 kills and 12 digs. Annie Pinegar had 18 digs.
Utah is idle for over a week before taking on Colorado State on Saturday, Oct. 20 in Fort Collins.
