PALO ALTO, Calif. - Senior outside hitter Morgan Odale posted a team-high eight kills to go with 12 digs, but the University of Utah volleyball team could not avoid a three-set loss to No. 8 Stanford (25-17, 25-18, 25-18) on Friday in a Pac-12 Conference match at Maples Pavilion.
Utah (13-4, 2-3 Pac-12) was led by a solid all-around performance by Odale, who committed a pair of errors on the attack during 24 attempts for a .250 hitting percentage. Odale turned in 12 digs to register her 11th double-digit-dig effort of the year and the 40th of her career.
Junior outside hitter Chelsey Schofield posted a team-high 13 digs to reach double digits in digs for the eighth time in 2013 and the 44th time of her career. She also tied senior middle blocker Erin Redd-Brandon with seven kills.
Redd-Brandon was also impressive as she posted a team-high-tying seven kills without an error on 16 swings for a team-high .438 hitting percentage. She now has 973 career kills and also turned in five digs, which fell just one shy of tying her career-high mark for the third time this season. The Spanish Fork, Utah native also turned in a team-high four blocks.
Junior right-side hitter Shelby Dalton added three blocks and a pair of kills.
Stanford grabbed the first five points of the match and would extend its lead to as many as six (10-4). The Ute fought to within four (11-7), but the Cardinal regained the edge and went on to lead by as many as 10 points, 21-11. Utah answered with a 5-1 run to cut its deficit to six, 22-16, on the way to a 25-17 first-set victory. Utah was led by four kills on six swings by Redd-Brandon without an error for a .667 hitting percentage against the Cardinal.
In the third frame, Stanford leapt out to a 5-0 lead and the Cardinal would build its lead to as many as six (7-1). The Utes reeled off four consecutive scores to come within two on three occasions (7-5, 8-6, 10-8) before the Cardinal extended out to a 15-8 lead via a 5-0 run on the way to a match-clinching 25-18 win.
No. 8 Stanford (11-3, 4-1 Pac-12) was led by 10 kills on a .529 efficiency by Carly Wopat.
The Utes continue their Pac-12 slate at California on Sunday at 7 p.m. PT. The match will be televised live nationally on the Pac-12 Networks.
