SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The University of Utah volleyball team turned in an all-around effort as it won the first match of the Results Advertising Missouri State Classic, topping Iowa State in four games.
Game scores were 26-30, 30-28, 30-22 and 30-27 as Utah improves to 4-2 on the year. The Cyclones are dealt only their second loss as they slip to 6-2 overall.
Three spikers tallied double-doubles as the team hit a smooth .259 in the four-game victory. Shelly Sommerfeldt led the way with 19 kills. She also had 11 digs on the night. Airial Salvo did the deed with 10 kills and 14 digs while Emillie Toone rattled off 13 kills and 10 blocks.
Freshman Shannon Krug ran the offense in dishing out 50 assists and saw Lori Baird and Toone lead the way in hitting. Toone hit a match-high .500 (13 kills and one error on 24 attempts) while Baird hit .429 (11-1-25).
Defensively, Utah outblocked their rivals, 13-7.5, and held them to paltry .132 hitting for the match. Toone's 10 total blocks led the Utes while Sommerfeldt's four total blocks were second.
Danielle Leichliter joined Salvo and Sommerfeldt with double-digit digs. Leichliter tallied 12 on the night.
Katie Jessen led ISU as she racked up 14 kills and hit a team-best .275. Amanda Craig had a team-leading 37 assists while Katie Churm had a match-high 27 digs. Jessica Klein turned in four total blocks to lead the Cyclones.
The Utes got off to a slow start as it only hit .163 in the first game. However, the offense clicked in the final three games as Utah hit a swift .290 during that span. The Utes hit a match-best .333 (20-4-48) in the two-point win in game two and never hit worse than .262 after game one.

Notes: This was the second straight match Shelly Sommerfeldt turned in 19 kills ... it is also her second straight match with a double-double ... Emillie Toone's 13 kills and 10 blocks were career highs as were Shannon Krug's 50 set assists ... Airial Salvo's 14 digs were also a career high ... this was the second straight match where four Utes had double-digit kills.
