SALT LAKE CITY - The No. 24-ranked (USA Today/CSTV)University of Utah women's volleyball team swept Utah Valley State in its season opener, 3-0.

Utah nabbed the sweep with game scores of 30-23, 30-19, and 30-16. The Utes start the season 1-0 while Utah Valley State stumbles out of the blocks to 0-1.

"I liked the intensity and energy that our team showed tonight," head coach Beth Launiere said. "It was getting pretty low in practice and it was obvious that we wanted to play someone else.

"I saw some good things tonight but also saw some things that needed work. But, it was a very good first match."

The Utes rallied around 19.5 team blocks, 10.5 of which came in the second game. UVSC wrapped up the match with 6.0 blocks. Utah's three-game record for team blocks still stands at 22.5 (vs. San Jose State in 2002).

Lyndsey Henderson led the team in that department, racking up one block solo and nine block assists. Kelsie Kartchner bagged seven (one solo, six assists), and freshman Emillie Toone finished with six (two and four).

Henderson and Danielle Leichliter led the offense. Henderson hit .467 for the match in collecting nine kills while Leichliter finished with eight and a .444 hitting percentage. The Wolverines' Alina Wallauer tallied a match-high 11 kills.

Kartchner and Tracy Neumeier handled the setting duties for the Utes. Kartchner had a team-high 17 assists while Neumeier had 16. Lacee Koelliker of the Wolverines had a match-high 27.

Five Utes tallied seven or more digs, three of which finished with nine. Wallauer finished with a match-high 11.

The Wolverines erased a five-point deficit in game one to tie it at nine apiece, but an 11-3 run by the Utes put them back in control, 20-12. Utah held off a late UVSC surge for the seven-point victory.

Game two was tight, as Utah's lead wasn't more than a five-points for most of the game. The Utes were able to extend it to seven late, 25-18, and ended up with the 11-point win. Utah hit .121 for the game but tallied 10.5 team blocks to UVSC's 2.0.

Utah pulled away midway through the third game, taking a 14-10 edge. However, Utah's lead stretched to seven points (22-15) as it completed the sweep with an 8-1 run en route to the 14-point victory.

A four-game road swing takes Utah to Los Angeles, Calif., to play Liberty and George Washington (Sept. 3), Long Beach (Sept. 4) and UC Irvine (Sept. 6). The Utes return to Crimson Court on Saturday, Sept. 11, to host Utah State. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
