TEMPE, Ariz. - The Utah volleyball team (1-2) earned its first win of the young season with a three-game sweep (30-25, 30-28, 20-25) of Ohio in their final match at the Sun Devil Volleyball Classic in Tempe, Ariz. The Utes hit .227 and had 12 service aces on the match.

"We settled down and were able to use our strengths this match," Head Coach Beth Launiere said. "Last night, we struggled with serving and passing, so we changed our lineup in order to get our best servers and passers on the court, which steadied us out."

"Did I want to come out of this tournament 1-2?" Launiere continued. "No, but we learned a ton and we'll be a better team for it."

Sophomore Shelly Sommerfeldt led the Utes with a career-high 17 kills to go along with four blocks. Senior All-American candidate Kim Turner added 15 kills, eight digs and two aces. Sophomore Danielle Leichliter added career-highs of eight kills and four service aces.

Junior setter Kelsie Kartchner finished with 45 assists, eight digs and four service aces, while senior libero Jackie Morrill had a team-high eight digs.

The Utes jumped out to a quick start in game one, taking a 5-1 lead. The Bobcats then tied it at 15 apiece and kept it close until Utah pulled away at the end for the 30-25 win. Both Turner and Sommerfeldt notched seven kills on the game as the Utes out-hit Ohio .237 to .074.

After Utah jumped out to a quick lead in game two, Ohio used a 7-0 run to take a four-point lead. The Utes then scored six straight to regain the lead, 15-13. Both teams then battled back and forth before Utah put it away 30-28.

The third and final game remained close until, down by two (19-17), Leichliter served eight straight points to put the game out of reach for Ohio. The Utes had six aces on the game.
