SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team is set to compete in the ITA Mountain Region Championships October 14-18 in Las Vegas, Nev., at the Darling Tennis Center. In previous years the Utes competed in the Central Region, but were placed into the Mountain Region over the summer when the regional boundaries were realigned.
"I am really looking forward to the tournament," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "It'll really give us a great look at where we stand with MWC rivals and give us a good idea of what we need to work on for the spring."
Last year Utah hosted the regional tournament where senior Andrea Maughan made a run all the way to the semifinals of the consolation draw before falling to an opponent from Colorado.
Senior Erin Monson upset the No. 9-seeded player from Tulsa in the main draw singles round of 64, and made it to the round of 16. Sophomore Anastasia Putilina went in as the No. 14-seed and advanced to the round of 32.
The doubles team of junior Evgenia Kryuchkova and former Utah player Leigh Walsh made it past the rounds of 64 & 32, along with fellow Utes sophomore Lisa Johnson and former Utah player Karine Bourdages before both teams fell in the round of 16 to teams from Wichita and Boise State, respectively.
The Utes are coming off a successful run at the Air Force Academy Invitational where newcomer Missy Harris and fellow sophomore Lexi Provancha won their respective singles flight titles. Overall the Utes netted 10 singles and four doubles wins.
The other Mountain Region teams joining the Utes in Las Vegas are Air Force*, BYU*, Boise State, Colorado, Colorado State*, Denver, Idaho, Idaho State, Montana, Montana State, Nevada, New Mexico*, New Mexico State, Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, SUU, UNLV*, Utah State, Weber State and Wyoming*.
