No. 40 Utes Head to Pac-12 Championships...
The 40th-ranked University of Utah women's tennis team (11-10, 3-7 Pac-12) heads to the Pac-12 Conference Championships this week taking place in Ojai, Calif.
"We are really excited to play in our first Pac-12 Conference tournament," said head coach Mat Iandolo. " It is the Championships of arguably the best tennis conference in the country."
Championship play begins Thursday, April 26, at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club.
The Pac-12 Women's Tennis Championships are played differently from the Men's. For the women, the Pac-12 Women's Team Champions will be decided by regular-season conference finish, while the women's singles and doubles champions will be determined at the tournament.
In singles, there will be a 32-player draw consisting of three players from the top 10 finishing schools and two players from the No. 11 school. For doubles, there will be a 16-team draw with one doubles team from each school and an additional five chosen by the Draw committee. In addition, players from Pac-12 teams not participating in the championship draws will have the opportunity to compete in the Pac-12 Singles Invitational and Pac-12 Doubles Invitational.
Competing in the Pac-12 Singles Championships for the Utes are senior Anastasia Putilina, ranked No. 52, and sophomores Sarah Pham and Callie Craig, with the duo of Putilina and Craig playing in the Doubles Championships.
Utah freshmen Danielle Flores, Natasha Smith and Sammie Watson are all slated to play in the Pac-12 Singles Invitational. Competing in the Doubles Invitational are the team of Flores and Smith and the duo of Pham and Watson.
Last Time Out Against Colorado...
Last weekend the Utes shut out the Buffaloes 7-0 in their final home match of the season. Putilina earned the match clinching point for Utah by besting Kristina Schleich 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 1 singles spot.
In doubles play, Pham and sophomore Lucia Kovarcikova downed Julyette Steur and Ashley Tiefel 8-1 at the No. 3 position. Putilina and Craig captured the doubles point from the No. 1 spot by defeating Schleich and Winde Janssens 8-3. Flores and Smith completed the Utes' doubles sweep by topping Ania Anuszkiewicz and Carla Manzi Tenorio 7-6(5) at the No. 2 position
In singles play, the Utes earned their second point by Colorado forfeit at the No. 6 position. Pham then downed Janssens 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot, setting Putilina up to clinch the match.
Flores topped Manzi Tenorio 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 4 spot, putting the Utes up 5-0. Craig bested Steur 6-0, 6-4, at the No. 3 position, while Smith defeated Tiefel 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 5 position, making the final score 7-0 in favor of Utah.
