No. 44 Utes Host Colorado in Final Regular Season Home Match...
The 44th-ranked University of Utah women's tennis team (10-10, 2-7 Pac-12) hosts Colorado (7-13, 0-9 Pac-12) this weekend, in its final home match of the year.
"Saturday is both our final home match of the year and senior day," said head coach Mat Iandolo. " I am both sad and excited going into this weekend. Sad because it's Anastasia's last home match and excited because we've put ourselves in a position for post-season play."
The Utes face the Buffaloes Saturday, April 21, at 11 a.m. MT. The match will be held outside at Coach Mike's Tennis Academy at 1216 Wasatch Drive (weather permitting).
In addition to being Utah's last home match of the season, the Utes' only senior Anastasia Putilina will be recognized.
The Buffaloes are coming off a pair of Pac-12 losses to No. 29 Arizona and No. 30 Arizona State. Colorado fell to the Wildcats 7-0 Friday, before dropping a close 4-3 decision to the Sun Devils Saturday. Ania Anuszkiewicz and Winde Janssens both captured their first Pac-12 singles wins in the Buffaloes loss to ASU.
Last year against the Buffaloes...
Last year Utah captured a 5-1 win over Colorado in Boulder, Colo. After securing the doubles point, the Utes went 4-1 in singles for the win. The team of Putilina and Paige Miles secured the doubles point from the No. 1 position, while former Ute Evgenia Kryuchkova captured the match-clinching point from the No. 2 singles spot.
Last Time Out Against No. 30 ASU & No. 29 Arizona...
Last weekend the Utes notched their second Pac-12 win by upsetting 30th-ranked Arizona State 5-2 Friday in Tempe, Ariz. Putilina, ranked No. 47, captured the match-clinching point by besting 79th-ranked Michelle Brycki 3-6, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 1 singles spot.
In singles action, Utah earned its first point by ASU forfeit at the No. 6 position. Freshman Natasha Smith added the Utes second point by downing Clare Frye 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 5 spot. At the No. 3 position sophomore Callie Craig put Utah up 3-1 by defeating Joanna Smith 6-0, 6-3, setting Putilina up to clinch the match. Sophomore Sarah Pham then topped Hannah James 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 2 spot, making the final score 5-2 in favor of the Utes.
In Utah's 7-0 loss to 29th-ranked Arizona Saturday, in Tucson, Ariz., the duo of Putilina and Craig upset the 35th-ranked team of Natasha Marks and Lacey Smyth 8-6 at the No. 1 doubles spot.
Last week Putilina rocketed up 30 spots to No. 47 in the ITA Singles Rankings...Putilina, sophomore Lucia Kovarcikova and freshman Danielle Flores have each captured three match-clinching points for the Utes... Putilina was named the Bank of the West Pac-12 Player of the Week for the week of April 2-8.
