42nd-Ranked Utes Head to Las Vegas for Trio of Matches...
The 42nd-ranked University of Utah women's tennis team (4-2) heads to Las Vegas, Nev. this weekend for a trio of matches against 37th-ranked UNLV (5-2), 34th-ranked Texas Tech (6-1) and 45th-ranked Long Beach State (5-1, 3-0 Big West).
"We are looking forward to three very competitive matches in Las Vegas," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "We are going to learn a lot about ourselves this weekend."
The Utes face the Rebels Friday (Feb. 24), before facing the Red Raiders Saturday (Feb. 25), and the 49ers Sunday (Feb. 26). All the matches are slated to start at 10 a.m. PT.
The Rebels, the Red Raiders and the 49ers...
Scouting UNLV...
Last weekend the Rebels defeated Utah State 6-1, before blanking UC Riverside 7-0. The wins extended their home-winning streak to five.
Last Year against the Rebels...
Last year Utah dropped a 4-3 decision to UNLV in regular-season Mountain West Conference action, in San Diego, Calif.
Scouting Texas Tech...
The Red Raiders extended their winning streak to five by capturing a 7-0 victory at Denver this past weekend.
Last time against the Red Raiders...
Last time Utah and Texas Tech met in March of 2009, in San Diego, Calif., the Utes notched a 4-3 over the Red Raiders.
Scouting Long Beach State...
The 45th-ranked 49ers defeated UC Riverside 6-1 and Cal State Northridge last weekend, to move to 3-0 in Big West Conference play.
Last time against the 49ers...
The last meeting between Utah and Long Beach State was in March 2004 in Long Beach, Calif., where the 49ers defeated the Utes 5-2.
Last Weekend's Wins Over the Cowgirls and the Badgers...
Against No. 63 Wyoming...
The No. 42 Utes blanked the No. 63 Cowgirls last Friday, at the Eccles Tennis Center. Utah went 6-0 in singles after securing the doubles point, for the 7-0 win over Wyoming.
Senior Anastasia Putilina, ranked No. 69, and freshman Natasha Smith notched the Utes' first two singles points, setting up freshman Danielle Flores to clinch the match at 4-0 from the No. 4 position. Posting the rest of Utah's singles wins were sophomores Sarah Pham, ranked No. 104, Callie Craig and Lucia Kovarcikova.
The freshmen duo of Flores and Smith captured the doubles point for the Utes from the No. 3 spot, after the team of Putilina and Craig netted a win at the No. 1 position.
Against No. 70 Wisconsin...
The Utes took down the Badgers 7-0 Sunday, in Salt Lake City. After capturing the hotly contested doubles point, 42nd-ranked Utah won all six singles matches for the win over 70th-ranked Wisconsin.
Kovarcikova clinched the match at 4-0 for the Utes, after singles wins by 104th-ranked Pham and 69th-ranked Putilina had given Utah a 3-0 lead. Also adding singles wins were Smith, Flores and Craig.
After the Utes split their doubles matches at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots, the team of Pham and Kovarcikova came from behind to capture the doubles point for Utah with a win at the No. 2 position.
Winning Streaks...
After dropping their first two dual-matches, the Utes bounced back to capture four 7-0 victories in a row at home. Utah also has two singles players and one doubles team that are undefeated in dual-match play. Putilina, ranked No. 69, is a perfect 5-0 at the No. 1 singles position, while Flores is 4-0 at the No. 4 spot. The duo of Flores and Smith are 4-0 at the No. 3 doubles spot. In addition to Utah's four-match run, Pham, Craig, Kovarcikova and Smith are all on 4-0 singles streaks.
Pham joins Putilina in the ITA Singles Rankings...
Sophomore Sarah Pham moved into the national singles rankings at No. 104 in the
Intercollegiate Tennis Association's poll released Thursday, Feb. 16. It marks the first national ranking of her collegiate career.
"I couldn't be more pleased that Sarah has made her debut in the national rankings," Iandolo stated. "I've always thought that she has what it takes to be a top-100 ranked player and she is on her way there."
Senior Anastasia Putilina earned a singles ranking of No. 69 in the most recent ITA poll.
