SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team kicked off the first day of the ITA Central Region Championships held at the Eccles Tennis Center.

In the singles qualifying rounds, freshman Ashley Young defeated Nebraska's Anna Oehme (0-6, 6-3, 1-0(6)) in the round of 64. Young advanced to the round of 32 but fell to Kansas' Christine Skoda (6-2, 6-2). Oklahoma's Joi-Lee Beachler downed junior Allison Hansen (6-2, 6-4) and Kansas' K. Steinbock defeated freshman Cinthia Saucedo.

Competition will continue Thursday Oct. 23 with the first round of the singles main draw beginning at 8:30 a.m. The first round of the doubles main draw starts at 4:30 p.m.
