Women's Tennis to Compete in Open Singles and Doubles

Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Utah women's tennis team completed the first day of the Wilson/ITA Central Regional Tournament on Wednesday. All four of the competitors that played in the qualifying round have been eliminated; however, the Ute squad will still be represented on Thursday in the Open Singles and Open Doubles.

Emily Kwok, a senior on the Ute squad, stepped into the round of 64 to face Julia Masoti from SEMU. The Ute dominated the court for a phenomenal 6-0, 6-0 performance against Masoti. In the round of 32, Marta Marcinkowska from Tulsa stepped up for a challenge against the Ute. Marcinkowska took the first set 6-2, but Kwok answered right back in the second set with a 6-4 win. In the tie-breaker, the two competitors were right on each other's heels. In the end, it was Marcinkowska that took the lead, taking the set and match at 6-2, 4-6, 10-8.

In the round of 64, Leigh Walsh faced Chirssy Svetic from Missouri. The Ute downed Svetic 6-4, 6-2 to advance into the round of 32. In the second round, Walsh took on Audrey Bordeleau of Arkansas. The Razorback took control of the contest to smash a 6-2, 6-2 win over the Ute.

On Thursday, the Ute squad will be represented in the Open Singles and Doubles. In singles play, Elizabeth Ferris (88) will face Hilary Tyler from Colorado State, while Evgenia Kryunchkova will take on Ela Kalunder from Arkansas.

In doubles play, Kwok and Erin Monson will take on Chie Hayaska and Jocelyn Jensen from BYU. Kryunchkova and Karine Bourdages will compete against Christine Abayan and Meghan Kiser from Air Force.
