LAS VEGAS - The University of Utah women's tennis team completed the first day of the USTA/ITA Mountain Regionals Wednesday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex. Singles play was limited to one round due to inclement weather, while doubles competition began Wednesday in place of the second round of singles play. The Utes went undefeated in the first day of competition.
"It was a solid day as we did not loose a match all day," said head coach Mat Iandolo.
First to finish on the Ute roster in singles play was sophomore Natasha Smith, who battled Montana's Precious Gbadamosi to a tight 7-5, 7-5 victory. Third-seeded junior Sarah Pham then downed Maria Sablina of New Mexico, 6-2, 6-3, while ninth-seeded junior Callie Craig topped Colorado's Carla Manzi, 6-2, 6-0. Seventh-seeded sophomore Tereza Bekerova then bested Svenja Tegtmeir of Idaho State, 6-1, 6-3. Finally, 12th-seeded Elena Najera-Salas defeated BYU's Mackenna Maddox, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.
In the first round of doubles competition, Ute duos of Phan and Natasha Smith as well as Craig and Najera-Salas enjoyed byes. Junior Page Miles and Bekerova netted an 8-0 shut out of Weber State's Annika Karlsen and Megan Rindlisbacher.
