Two singles players and two doubles teams post big wins

Andrea Maughan, a sophomore, knocked off two wins during the first day of the tournament- one in singles and one in doubles play with partner Evgenia Kryunchkova.

BOISE, IDAHO - The University of Utah ended day one of the Jack Taylor Tennis Invitational on Friday with two wins each in singles and doubles play. Andrea Maughan and Evgenia Kryunchkova had stand out appearances in both events.

Maughan, a sophomore from Waterford, Ireland, faced Remy Clark of Montana State in singles play. The Ute slammed a 6-2, 6-3 win. Kryunchkkova, a true freshman from Russia, faced Anna Powaska from Oregon. The Ute took the first set at 6-3, but the Duck answered back with a 6-1 win in the second set. Kryunchkova stepped up her game in the tie-breaker. Not allowing a single win, the Ute took the set and match at 6-3, 1-6, 6-0.

In doubles play, Maughan and Kryunchkova teamed up against Ola Abou-Zekry and Victoria Tessmar from New Mexico. The teams went point-for-point, but it was the Utes that stepped up their game in the end to take the match at 8-5 over the Lobos.

Erin Monson and Leigh Walsh teamed up in doubles to play to bring in the other win for the Utes. The Ute duo faced Powaska and Siobhan Cavan from Oregon. The Utes played the match with ease, slamming an 8-2 win over the Duck duo.

Tournament notes
The tournament is not being played in a bracket format, instead the coaches are matching players against others of similar caliber. There will not be a championship for the most part just a series of matches for each individual and doubles teams.
