ATHENS, Ga.- The 49th-ranked University of Utah women's tennis team (16-10) fell to 26th-ranked Alabama (16-6), by a score of 4-0, in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Championships Saturday, in Athens, Ga.
"This was a very close match in spite of the score," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "The team learned a lesson today that will help us play on this stage in the future."
After a 48 minute rain delay, the Utah doubles duo of junior Anastasia Putilina and sophomore Paige Miles dropped an 8-2 decision to the Crimson Tide's11th-ranked team of Alexa Guarachi and Courtney McLane at the No. 1 position. The team of Evgenia Kryuchkova and Lexi Provancha then fell to Alex Clay and Taylor Lindsey, 8-4, at the No. 2 spot, to give Alabama the doubles point.
The freshman duo of Sarah Pham and Lucia Kovarcikova were tied 5-5 with Antonia Foehse and Mary Anne Macfarlane at the No. 3 position when their match was halted.
In singles play, Provancha dropped a 7-6(6), 6-1, decision to Merritt Emery at the No. 6 spot, while Pham saw her twelve-match streak snapped when she fell to McLane at the No. 2 position, 6-3, 7-5.
Kryuchkova, the ITA Mountain Region Senior Player of the Year, then dropped a 6-3, 7-5, to 69th-ranked Guarachi at the No. 2 position, to give the Crimson Tide the win at 4-0.
With the team match clinched, the remaining singles contests were halted. Putilina was up in her third set at the No. 1 spot, while Kovarcikova (No. 4) was in her second and Miles (No. 5) was about to start her third.
Putilina returns to action at the 2011 NCAA Division I women's singles championships May 25-30, in Palo Alto, Calif.
