LONG BEACH, Calif. - The University of Utah women's tennis team was defeated 5-2 by No. 55 Long Beach State at 49er Campus Courts.
The 49er's swept the doubles matches and took an early 1-0 lead over the Utes. Senior Sheri Esrock and freshman Cinthia Saucedo lost to Nicole Bouffler and Sandra Rocha (8-3) at the No. 1, while freshman Whitney Eber and sophomore Jenessa Jackson fell to Alanah Carrol and Kelly Chan (8-2) at the No. 2. At the No. 3, the duo of senior Rachel Alder and freshman Jessica Watts were defeated by Lindsey Marvel and Krystina Katayama (8-3).
In singles play, Long Beach continued to sweep Utah. The Utes picked up two wins. Competing at the No. 3 spot, Saucedo took care of Rocha in three sets (6-2, 4-6, 10-6). Watts' opponent Carroll retired after two sets, giving the win to Utah (6-4, 2-1, ret.) at the No. 5. Eber dropped to Bouffler (6-1, 6-1) at the No. 1 and Esrock dropped to Chan (6-1, 6-3) at the No. 2. At the No. 4, Alder took a (6-2, 6-1) loss to Marvel and Jackson fell to Emmanuelle Tabatruong (6-1, 6-1) at the No. 6.
The Utes conclude their spring break, road trip against UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, March 21.
