HOUSTON - The University of Utah women's tennis team, ranked 75, was shut down 7-0 by No. 56 Rice at the Jake Hess Stadium. The Utes fall to 5-5 on the season.
In doubles play, the most disappointing loss was at the No. 1 spot. Senior Sheri Esrock and freshman Cinthia Saucedo were up (7-4) when Lauren Archer and Blair DiSesa came back for a (9-7) victory. At the No. 2, freshmen Whitney Eber and Jessica Watts were crushed (8-0) by Tracie Chong and Karen Chao. Sophomore Jenessa Jackson and senior Rachel Alder lost (8-1) to Yasmin Fisher and Annie Goodrich at the No. 3.
The Utes were dominated by the Owls in singles. Esrock lost (6-1, 6-0) to DiSesa at the No. 1 and Eber was dispatched by Archer (6-2, 6-1) at the No. 2. At the No. 3, Saucedo fell to Chong (6-1, 6-1), while Watts fell to Chao(6-3, 6-1) at the No. 4. Jackson suffered a (6-0, 6-1) loss to Fisher at the No. 5 and Alder walked away with a (6-2, 6-0) loss to Goodrich at the No. 6.
The Utes are next in action tomorrow against Houston on the John E. Hoff courts at 10:00 a.m.
