SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis slammed a big win over No. 70 Rice University on Tuesday at Eccles Tennis. The Utes took the match 4-3 over the Owls, to push their season record to 6-4.

It was an epic battle in doubles play on Wednesday between the Utes and Owls. At the No. 1 slot, Emily Kwok and Cheyenne Reveche played Dominique Karas and Julie Chao from the Owls for a 9-8 (9-7) hard fought win. Ute duo Elizabeth Ferris and Leigh Walsh found themselves in a similar situation, but also prevailed 9-8 (7-4) over Tiffany Lee and Christine Dao from Rice. Finishing out doubles play, Karine Bourdages and Andrea Maughan defeated Rebecca Lin and Emily Braid for a powerful 8-3 win.

In singles play, the Rice Owls stepped up their game against the Utes. Ferris represented the Utes at the No. 1 slot against Julie Chao from Rice for a 6-3, 6-4 straight-set win. Kwok played Christine Dao at the No. 2 slot. Kwok edged ahead in the first set to take it 7-5, but had no trouble at all pulling out a win in the second set for a 7-5, 6-1 win to nudge the Utes to a 3-0 advantage.

At the No. 3 slot, Walsh put up a big fight against Tiffany Lee, but was unable to tame the Owl. Lee took the match 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) over Walsh. Reveche represented the Utes at the No. 4 slot against Dominique Karas from the Owls. The two battled hard in the first set ending in a 7-6 (7-4) win in Karas' favor. The Owl continued her stride to overcome Reveche and take the second set and match at 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.

At the No. 5 slot, Jessica Carter took on Rebecca Lin from the Owls. Lin dominated the Ute freshman 6-1, 6-1 to tie up the overall match 3-3. Senior Cinthia Saucedo was the last one on the courts, facing Emily Braid from Rice. Saucedo slid by in the first set to take it 7-6 (10-8), and continued to dominate during the second set. The Ute clinched the overall victory with her 7-6 (10-8), 6-1 match win.
