Utah Women's Tennis Drops Close Match to Oklahoma State

TULSA, Okla.- The University of Utah women's tennis team (2-5) fell to Oklahoma State (3-1), by a score of 4-3, Monday at the DeBois Tennis Stadium.

"We fought hard against a strong team on the road today," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "This stretch of having to play without Anastasia will make us a better team."

In doubles play, sophomore Missy Harris and freshman Paige Miles downed Alisa Buslaieva and Leyla Simmons at the No. 3 spot, 8-1. Seniors Erin Monson and Andrea Maughan fell to Nataliya Shatkovskaya and Sasha Belova, 8-5, at the No. 1 position.

Junior Evgenia Kryuchkova and sophomore Lisa Johnson clinched the doubles point at the No. 2 spot by defeating Sarah Meghoufel and Malika Rose, 8-2, putting the Utes up 1-0.

In singles play, Monson fell to Buslaieva at the No. 1 position, 6-3, 6-0, evening up the score at 1-1.

Miles was topped in a three-set match at the No. 3 spot by Belova, 6-7(4), 6-1, 6-0, making the score 2-1 in favor of the Cowgirls.

Johnson defeated Alex Cristello, 7-5, 6-4, at the No. 6 position, tying up the score at 2-2.

Harris fell at the No. 4 spot to Meghoufel, 6-1, 7-6(4), putting Oklahoma State up, 3-2, over Utah.

Maughan topped Rose in a three-set match at the No. 5 position, 6-0, 1-6, 6-4, tying the Utes back up with the Cowgirls.

At the No. 2 spot, Kryuchkova was unable to overcome Shatkovskaya, falling 7-6(4), 7-6(12), clinching the match for Oklahoma State at 4-3.

Utah is still without its No. 1 player, sophomore Anastasia Putilina, who was injured in the match against Colorado.

The Utes return home to host Denver February 14, at noon.
