LOS ANGELES, Calif.- The 49th-ranked University of Utah women's tennis team (0-1) dropped a 4-1 decision to fourth-ranked UCLA (2-0) Friday, at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Los Angeles, Calif. Sophomore Sarah Pham earned the Utes point by upsetting 62nd-ranked McCall Jones 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 2 singles position. Utah faces 25th-ranked Oklahoma (3-1) Saturday, Jan. 28, at 6 p.m. PT, at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Live stats for tomorrow's match will be available at www.UCLABruins.com

"I am proud of our effort," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "We battled them at the top four positions and nearly pulled off an upset. We need to get a little more production at the bottom of our lineup, so Natasha [Smith] is going back in tomorrow. We are looking forward to facing Oklahoma tomorrow as it will be another opportunity against a top-25 school."

In doubles play, the duo of Pham and junior Paige Miles dropped an 8-0 decision to 12th-ranked team of Robin Anderson and Skylar Morton at the No. 2 spot. Sophomore Lucia Kovarcikova and freshman Danielle Flores then fell to Jones and Carling Seguso at the No. 3 position, 8-2, to give UCLA the doubles point.

The duo of senior Anastasia Putilina and sophomore Callie Craig dropped an 8-2 decision to the 23rd-ranked team Courtney Dolehide and Pamela Montez at the No. 1 spot.

In singles play, freshman Sammie Watson fell to Chanelle Van Nguyen 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 6 position, while at the No. 5 spot Kovarcikova dropped a 6-1, 6-0, decision to 112th-ranked Kaitlin Ray, to put the Bruins up 3-0.

 

 

Pham then upset 62nd-ranked Jones at the No. 2 position, to make the score 3-1 in favor of UCLA.

Craig fell in a three-set match to 70th-ranked Montez, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 3 spot to give the Bruins the win at 4-1.

Putilina, ranked No. 90, was up in her third set against eighth-ranked Anderson at the No. 1 position and Flores was in her third set against Morton at the No. 4 spot when the match was halted.
