AUSTIN, Texas - The 34th-ranked University of Utah women's tennis team (1-1) dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 11 Texas, Sunday at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center as part of the ITA Kickoff Weekend. Utah netted the doubles point, but was unable to post a victory in singles play.
In doubles action, 23rd-ranked junior Paige Miles and sophomore Tereza Bekerova vanquished Breaunna Addison and Noel Scott, 8-2, at the No. 1 position. Junior Elena Najera-Salas and sophomore Natasha Smith then fell to Elizabeth Begley and Aeriel Ellis, 8-3, at the second slot, setting up juniors Callie Craig and Sarah Pham to clinch the doubles point from the No. 3 spot. Craig and Pham battled Lina Padegimaite and Annat Rabinovich to an 8-6 victory, putting the Utes up 1-0.
In singles play, junior Lucia Kovarcikova fell to Begley at the No. 4 position, 6-0, 6-2, tying the match at one apiece. Texas then went up 2-1 when Miles dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision to Padegimaite at the fifth slot. No. 103 Pham was then upset by Addison at the No. 2 spot, 6-4, 6-0, while No. 123 Craig fell to No. 79 Scott, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 3 position, making the final score 4-1 in favor of Texas.
At the top spot, No. 72 Bekerova battled Aeriel Ellis to a score of 6-0, 5-5 before the match was suspended. Smith's match against Lana Groenvynch at the No. 6 position was also suspended at 6-7, 0-1.
Utah next faces Wisconsin on the road, Saturday, Feb. 8, at 1 p.m.
