SALT LAKE CITY- The 50-ranked Utah women's tennis team (1-1) suffered its first loss of the dual match season to Washington (3-0) Sunday at the Eccles tennis center, 7-0.
"We got beaten by a team that visibly wanted it more than us," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "We learned a lot as a team from that and we will apply it as we move through the early part of the season. I was very impressed with the Huskies talent level and fight."
The Huskies took a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point. Erin Monson and Karine Bourdages playing at the third position were topped by Aleksandra Malovic and Lina Xu, 8-6. At the No. 1 spot Anastasia Putilina and Lisa Johnson were unable to overcome Venise Chan and Denise Dy, losing 9-7. Evgenia Kryuchkova and Walsh fell to Joyce Ardies and Samantha Smith, 8-4, at the second position.
In singles play the Utes were unable to hold off the Huskies, falling in all six singles matches giving Washington its 7-0 win. Johnson lost to Smith at the No. 4 spot, 6-3, 6-0. At the second position Kryuchkova was beaten by Dy, 7-5, 6-3. Putilina was defeated by Chan at the No. 1 spot, 7-5, 6-4. Provancha lost to Malovic, 7-5, 6-0, in the sixth position. Monson fell to Xu at the No. 3 spot, 7-6, 6-3. Walsh was topped by Ardies in the fifth position, 4-6, 6-4, 10-7.
Utah's next action will be January 31st at Miami.
