Freshman Anastasia Putilina
Jan. 22, 2009
SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah women's tennis team (1-0) snapped a five-match losing streak to Washington State (3-1) Thursday afternoon with a 5-2 win at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center. The match was clinched by freshman Anastasia Putilina who defeated Elizabeth Fournier at the No.1 spot, 6-4, 6-4.
"It's a good start to beat a team that is not only No. 44 in the country but who has beaten us our last five meetings," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "We competed well, but I think we could have played even better. It shows a lot that we were not playing our best and still won against a top-50 team. Also, to have three freshmen in the lineup and have two out of three win in straight sets was a catalyst for us.
"I was very impressed with how Washington State fought," continued Iandolo. "We knew that would happen, they always put forth a great effort. I am looking forward to our big upcoming match this Sunday against Washington."
Utah took an early 1-0 lead by capturing the doubles point. First to finish was the Ute pairing of freshman Lisa Johnson and Putilina as they put away Bianca Selaru and Aleksandra Cekic in the No. 1 spot, 8-1. Junior Erin Monson and Senior Karine Bourdages clinched the doubles point with an 8-5 victory over Jessica Gomez and Marina Nicolas in the No. 3 spot, 8-5. In the No. 2 spot Evgenia Kryuchkova and Leigh Walsh battled Fournier and Alex Oprea in the third position but fell by a score of 8-6.
In singles play, Walsh topped Selaru, 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 5 position to put the Utes up 2-0. Utah then took a 3-0 lead as freshman Lexi Provancha defeated Jessica Gomez in the No. 6 spot, 6-2, 6-2. Washington State then picked up its first point of the match with a win in the fourth position as Johnson fell to Nicolas, 6-4, 6-1, cutting Utah's lead to 3-1. Putilina then clinched the match for the Utes with her win at the top spot.
The Utes are back in action Sunday at 12:00 p.m. MT as they host No. 38 Washington (1-0) at the Eccles Tennis Center.
