Evanston, Ill. - The women's tennis team stepped up their intensity at the Northwestern Invitational to slam several big wins in both singles and doubles play. Elizabeth Ferris, Evgenia Kryuchkova, Andrea Maughan, and Karine Bourdages were the leaders in singles play. Head coach Mat Iandolo mixed up the doubles teams on Saturday, resulting in some big wins, one of which over a doubles team from Northwestern.
"We had a shaky start yesterday; however, I feel like the team learned a lot from all of the close matches that were lost," said Iandolo. "I think this tournament is good experience for our team as we head into our dual matches next week."
Playing in the Flight A singles, Ferris faced Dunja Antunovic from DePaul University. The two played through two straight sets, ending in a 6-3, 6-4 Utah victory.
In the Flight B singles, Kryuchkova was challenged by Katarina Milinkovic of the DePaul Blue Demons. Milinkovic took the first set at 6-4, but was answered back with a fierce 6-1 win by Kryuchkova in the second set. In the tie-breaker, the two went point for point until the Ute dug deep to take the final point. Kryuchkova took the win at 4-6, 6-1, 7-6.
Maughan competed in the Flight E bracket against Anja Mihaldinec from the Blue Demons on Saturday. The Ute took the first set at 6-4, but was unable to seal the deal in the second set. Mihaldinec took the second set at 7-6, sending the two into a tie-breaker. Maughan stepped up her game to take the win, finishing out with a 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 victory.
Bourdages finished out singles play for Utah on Saturday in the Flight F bracket. The Ute faced Bojana Murisic from DePaul for a three set battle. Bourdages took the first set at 6-2, but the Blue Demon matched the score in the second set with a 6-2 win. Not going down without a fight, Bourdages dug down and slammed out a 6-3 win for the 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 victory.

Kryuchkova teamed up with Maughan in the Flight C bracket to face Selma Salkovic and Anja Mihaldinec from DePaul. The Ute duo struggled at first against the Blue Demon duo, but was able to edge out a 9-8 victory.
In the Flight D bracket, Maughan teamed up with Erin Monson to compete against veterans Keri Robison and Alexis Conill from Northwestern University. The Ute duo stood loud and proud at they slammed a well-deserved 8-5 victory over the Northwestern duo.
"I am extremely proud of how our team performed today. Liz and Jane [Evgenia] are like a one-two punch for our competitors," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "Andrea and Erin pulled out a good win in doubles over the Northwestern team. That loss may end up being Northwestern's only one during the tournament this weekend."
