SALT LAKE CITY - For the second-consecutive year, the University of Utah's intercollegiate athletic teams set a department record for the highest cumulative grade point average for the spring semester. Utah's teams averaged a 3.153 GPA for the spring, besting the previous record of 3.136 from the spring of 2012. Utah has now posted six consecutive semesters with an athletic department GPA of 3.0 or better, another school first.
More than 60-percent of Utah's student-athletes (278 of 434) made the Athletic Director's Honor Roll with a GPA of 3.0 or better in 2012-13. Nearly a third of them--or 124 total--earned Dean's List status, which requires a minimum GPA of 3.5.
The gymnastics and men's and women's ski teams all placed 100-percent of their respective athletes on the honor roll. The gymnastics team also posted the highest GPA among all teams in 2012-13, including a 3.772 in the spring semester.
The women's ski team had the highest percentage of its athletes earn Dean's List accolades at 60 percent, while the football team had the highest number of Dean's List honorees with 19. The men's basketball team also had more than 50 percent of its team make the honor roll and posted a team GPA of 3.235. The men's swimming and diving team made the greatest single-year gain, raising its GPA by nearly 10 percent since the spring of 2012.
In total, Utah's varsity teams posted a cumulative GPA above a 3.1 for the academic year.
