The University of Utah softball team returns to Ute Softball Field to continue its Mountain West Conference schedule Thursday through Saturday against Colorado State and New Mexico. The Utes begin their week Thursday against Colorado State at 4 p.m. Utah will then host a pair of games against New Mexico beginning Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.
Utah has won 11 of its last 13 outings and had its season-long eight-game win streak snapped Friday at UNLV. The Utes are now 24-17 overall after going 2-1 on the road against San Diego State and UNLV last weekend. Utah maintains a 7-1 record within the friendly confines of Ute Softball Field after their first homestand of 2011.
Hogue Earns Win 100 at Utah: Utah head coach Amy Hogue broke the 100-win barrier with Saturday's 14-1 win at UNLV. Hogue now boasts 297 career wins after turning in a 197-82 (.706) record in five seasons at Salt Lake Community College.
9 Out of 10 Ain't Bad: The Utes have won nine of their last 10 games. During this streak, Utah has outscored its opponents 64-22 and outhit them .336 to .218. Utah also boasts a .589 slugging percentage during this stretch and has gone 15-of-20 on stolen bases while its opponents are 2-of-5. Chalese Fankhauser (South Jordan, Utah) is hitting .429 during the stretch.
Ute Position-by-Position Notebooks
Infield Notebook: Junior third baseman Whitney Holm (Spanish Fork, Utah) was 3-for-9 at the plate last week with a double and home run for five RBI to go along with five RBI. Holm was one of two Utes with a multi-hit performance in Utah's 14-1 five-inning win at UNLV on Saturday. She went 2-for-3 with five RBI on a home run and double. Utah's offensive outburst against the Rebels began in the second inning when Holm connected on a first-pitch, two-run home run.
Outfield Notebook: A pair of freshmen outfielders has evolved into integral parts of the Ute offense. Tara Glover (Grants Pass, Ore.) ranks second in the MWC with 31 runs scored and is tied for sixth place with 42 hits while Fankhauser is sixth in the league with a .586 slugging percentage.
Pitching Notebook: Junior right-hander Generra Nielson (Blanding, Utah) leads the MWC with 165 strikeouts this season and is listed among the top 10 in five of the league's other statistical categories. She is second in wins (16) and batters struck out looking (45), third in innings pitched (141.1), fifth in opponent batting average (.236) and sixth in ERA (3.07).
