The Utah softball team plays the middle contest of its three-game Pac-12 Conference set TODAY against No. 19/15 Oregon at Ute Field at 4 p.m.
The Utes are 23-16 overall this season and looking to snap an eight-game losing streak. After dropping the series opener yesterday to the Ducks, Utah owns an 0-10 record in Pac-12 play.
Hoopin': Junior shortstop Kelsi Hoopiiaina (Riverton, Utah) had the Utes' lone extra-base hit of the day with a double in the fifth inning Friday against Oregon.
Hoopiiaina is now tied with senior third baseman Whitney Holm (Spanish Fork, Utah) for second place on the team in doubles with eight this season and has 24 over her career. She is second on the squad with 15 extra-base hits this year and she has 41 over Ute career.
Hoopiiaina scored each of the first two times she reached base Wednesday at No. 13/13 Arizona. Hoopiiaina also stole a base to push her season total to 12, which is seventh in the Pac-12.
`Hoop' is a perfect 12-for-12 in steal attempts this season and 17-of-25 over her career.
Error Free:Utah has had 14 error-free performances in the field this season, including a stretch of four straight from Mar. 12 through Mar. 21. The Utes are 9-5 this season when not committing a miscue in the field.
Utes Come to Play Every Day:Four different Utes have played in all 39 games this season.
Three infielders have started every single game this season, including Holm at third base, Hoopiiaina at shortstop and Jackie Sweet (Corona, Calif.) at second base.
Freshman Kate Dickman (Mission Viejo, Calif.) has played every game in the Ute outfield as well.
Desaray at the Plate:In her ninth start of the year, freshman catcher Desaray Akins (Tucson, Ariz.) came up with her third hit of the season on Friday, a base hit to left field off a 1-2 delivery, in the fourth inning.
Nielson Notes: With four more strikeouts Friday against Oregon, Utah senior right-hander Generra Nielson (Blanding, Utah) upped her career total to 429, with 230 of those coming this season. Nielson turned in back-to-back complete games in Tucson. She now has 15 complete-game efforts this year and 24 during her time at Utah. Nielson leads the Pac-12 and is fifth in the country with 230 strikeouts this season, 53 of which were looking. She also leads the league with 30 starts this season and is also tied for the lead league with 32 appearances.
