Softball coach Mona Stevens works hard to see all is in harmony on the field... and on the stage. In addition to continually leading the Utes to successful seasons, she is the talented lead singer/guitarist behind one of Salt Lake's newest local bands, Sister Wives. University of Utah athletes from all sports have frequently heard the coach sing at Ute banquets. Now, those outside the University are hearing her.
Formed less than a year ago, Sister Wives is a female group that Stevens describes as having a "rock-blues" sound. They have gotten some great airplay on KRCL 90.9 FM, the Wasatch Front's "listener-supported community radio station." They also recently held a concert, intended for about 150 listeners, but attended by over 300 supporters; according to Mona, "there was standing room only. It was amazing."
Though the band is in its infancy, it has associations with several Salt Lake clubs such as the Zephyr and the Dead Goat Saloon, and is working hard to get another event on its calendar. "It's difficult right now with my busy softball schedule," says Stevens, "but it's still a lot of fun...I love to sing, and this is a fantastic group." So far, the group has no CD available, but if her record in softball is any indicator of the band's potential, there's no question we'll be hearing more about Sister Wives.
Stevens has perhaps lost a little speed on her pitch that made her a standout in college, but she kept her pitch in singing the blues on stage, especially during the off-season. Right now, its all softball for the popular coach and fortunately, she has been singing a happy tune over the past years on the field.
