Last Time Out: Senior Ashley Smuda pitched 25.0 innings in four appearances for the Utes and only allowed nine earned runs on 20 hits with 13 strikeouts at Cathedral City Classic. Utah received an especially impressive performance from Smuda on the mound during the final day in games against Long Beach State and UC Davis. The Scottsdale, Ariz., native tossed 14 innings for the Utes, allowing only one earned run for a 0.50 ERA.
Junior Brooke Olson (Bluffdale, Utah) posted a team-high .429 batting average with two RBI and two stolen bases last weekend. In the final day of play against Long Beach State and UC Davis, Olson was for 4-for-6 on the day with three runs scored, two RBI, a double and a stolen base.
Quick Starters: The Utes have scored in the first inning in 13 of their 15 games this season and are outscoring their opponents 26-7 in the first frame. Utah has also been the first team to score in 13 of its 15 games in 2010.
Making Their Mark: Smuda and Foster are mentioned in seven different categories in the Utah career record books. Aside from being the U.'s all-time leader with 56 career home runs, Foster is listed in batting average (.329, .12 shy of No. 5), runs (117, 13 shy of No. 5), doubles (31, nine shy of No. 5) and RBI (140, 14 shy of No. 3). Smuda could enter the top five in appearances (90, 18 shy of No. 5), wins (39, 14 shy of No. 5) and strikeouts (338, 3 shy of No. 5).
999 and Counting: With one more win, Utah would claim its 1,000th victory in program history. The Utes' all-time record is 999-737-5 (.575).
Double the Fun: Utah turned a season-high three double plays in Saturday's win against Long Beach State.
