SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Sophomore designated player Jasey Jensen hit her fourth home run of the season, but the University of Utah softball team dropped its regular-season finale to New Mexico, 5-2, Saturday at Ute Softball Field.

Four different Utes registered hits on the day as Utah (22-31, 4-10 MWC) put together its best scoring chance of the day when Kara Foster led off the fifth inning by drawing a walk. Whitney Holm just missed her 11th home run of the season, connecting on a fly out to the left-field warning track.

Jensen followed Holm and was able to convert the situation into a pair of runs for the Utes by hitting her fourth home run of the season over the left-field wall. The sophomore from Layton, Utah has now driven in 10 runs this season.

Freshman pitcher Joni Cook got the start for the Utah and went 6.1 innings, allowing three earned runs while allowing a pair of walks. After she got out of the first inning, Cook retired 12 of the next 13 hitters she faced in the second through fifth inning. Smuda took the loss and ended the season 12-10.

The Lobos got on the board first when Analise Rubalcava singled and Samantha Hughes connected for a two-run home run over the left-field fence to give the Lobos a 2-0 edge after the first half inning of play.

New Mexico started it sixth inning with a walk by Rubalcava and Hughes doubled to left-center field to put runners on first and third base with no one out. After Shaunte Duarte popped out to first base, Cook got Erin Brandow to ground into a double play turned by Holm at third base.

Senior Bonnie Muir hit a double to right-center field in the Utah sixth inning and Kara Foster singled to the New Mexico shortstop, but the Lobos got the Utes to hit into a fielder's choice and Muir was cut down at home plate.

Unfortunately, the Lobos were able to take advantage of their offensive opportunity in the next inning by scoring three runs in the top of the seventh inning to set the final margin at 5-2.

Kerry Hodgins got the win for New Mexico (13-35, 4-11 MWC) and improved her record to 4-2.

Utah's five senior student-athletes Sharee Fonoti, Angie Boardman, Staci Hemingway, Andrea Hoffman and Muir were honored during a post-game ceremony after playing the last game of their careers at Ute Softball Field.
