SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah softball team edged UVSC in what was game one of a doubleheader here this afternoon, 5-4.
Utah (19-27 overall) had a twinbill with UVSC scheduled for this afternoon but game two was cancelled due to heavy rainstorms in the area. The Wolverines wrap up their season and are 13-36-1.
It was an offensive outburst as the two teams combined to tally 22 hits (11 each), four doubles and two home runs on the day.
Leading the way for Utah was a trio of batters with a pair of hits. The 3-4-5 batters were 6-for-9 on the day with Bryanne Durrence going 2-for-2, Devina Quintero going 2-for-3 and Ivette Hernandez hitting 2-for-4. Quintero and Hernandez each had a homer and two RBI to their credit as well.
Lindsie Nielsen got the start and the win in improving to 9-13 for the year. Brianna Gourdin came on in the seventh to retire the last three batters and tallies her first save of the year. Nielsen went six innings and struck out eight. She allowed 10 hits and no walks. Gourdin's relief effort saw her go one inning with one strike out and one hit.
It was a back-and-forth game as UVSC seemed to match Utah run-for-run at the onset. Utah raced out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning but the Wolverines matched it with a two-run third inning of their own.
However, Quintero broke the 2-2 tie with a leadoff home run in the third, 3-2. The Utes would add two more with another swing of the bat. In the fourth, Hernandez stepped in and sent a towering shot over the left field fence. It scored Diana Phillips who walked in the previous at-bat.
The Wolverines staged a rally with RBI singles in each the fifth and sixth to cut the lead to one, 5-4. And, they did get the tying run on board with two outs in the seventh. But, their rally came to end when Jackie Roberts grounded out the end the game.
