Sara Farnworth picked up
both wins against UNLV
SALT LAKE CITY -- Freshman Sarah Farnworth picked up both wins in a doubleheader sweep of UNLV, 3-2 and 6-2, on Friday afternoon at Ute Field.
Farnworth went the distance in the opener, giving up one earned run off of eight hits and stuck out three.
With the game tied a 1-1, Utah (25-16, 12-8 WAC) plated a run each both the fifth and sixth innings. UNLV (15-20, 9-9 WAC) came back with a run in the top of the seventh. Sandy Rhea led the Ute offense, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Farnworth, who improved to 15-8, also started the second game. Farnworth threw five innings and gave up just four hits. With the Utes already leading 3-0 with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Stacey Farnworth hit her first collegiate home run, a three-run shot to left field that also brought in Carrie Kosderka and Sunny Smith, to break the game open. Kristin Arbogast surrendered two runs off of two hits while pitching the last two innings.
Stacey Farnworth went 3-for-3 in the game. Kosderka was 2-for- 3 with two runs scored.
"I thought that Sarah (Farnworth) threw a great first game," said Ute head coach Mono Stevens. "She got some more pitches up in the second game. We got some solid hits off of Brandi Isgar in the first game, and I'm happy with that because she's a very good pitcher. It was cold out there, but its just nice to be home."
Utah hosts New Mexico on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Ute Field.
