Las Vegas, Nev.--The Utes used a 9-0 shutout to conclude a doubleheader sweep against UNLV (18-31, 2-8) on Friday night. The win bumps Utah to 5-3 in league play and 16-19 overall. Utah now travels to San Diego, Calif., to face first-place San Diego State tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
The Utes jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first after Niki Hayhurst knocked a solo home run. In the fifth, Utah added another run using three straight singles, including one by Hayhurst to score Jackie Wong, 2-0.
It was the sixth, that proved to be big again for Utah. With two outs and a runner on, Utah began a rally that included five hits, a double, two walks and a fielding error that led to seven runs in the inning and a 9-0 lead. Utah then held UNLV scoreless in the bottom of the sixth to secure the victory.
Junior Heather Bowlin (4-8) tossed the shutout for Utah. Bowlin allowed just three hits in 5.0 innings with three strikeouts. Brianna Gourdin, who came on in the sixth, retired three straight Rebels to close out the game.
Hayhurst finished the day 2-of-3 at the plate, with two RBI and two runs scored. Glennis Donnelly and Lynsey Wall also knocked in two runs and scored one each. All but one Ute starter had a hit in the contest.
