ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.--It was a pitchers' duel through seven innings of play, as the Utes and New Mexico battled in game one of a league twin bill on Friday afternoon. Utah would wind up winning the game 1-0 aided by Devina Quintero's home run off the first pitch of the extra inning. The win moves the Utes to 4-3 in league play, 14-22 overall, while New Mexico remains winless (0-5, 26-23 overall) in league play.
The dinger was Quintero's 11th of the season, along with her 31st RBI. The Lobos' Iraina Ogas had tossed an impressive game before giving up the home run in the eighth. Ogas' final line read one run, five hits, five strikeouts and one walk. Ogas did come back in the latter of the inning with a two-out double, but the Lobos were unable to bring in the run.
Equally impressive was Utah hurler Brianna Gourdin, who moves to 11-4 with the victory. Gourdin scattered eight hits over eight innings of work. She held the Lobos scoreless, while fanning eight and allowing no walks. Gourdin had strong defense behind her to maintain the shutout. In the third, New Mexico led off the inning with a single and moved the runner to second using a sac bunt. The next runner would drive a single to right that Quintero would scoop up and fire to catcher Bryanne Durrence, who would then apply the tag for the second out of the inning.
