FULLERTON, Calif. - The University of Utah softball team (13-7) spotted the No. 14-ranked Oklahoma Sooners a four-run lead and couldn't counter it in falling to its rivals, 4-1, at the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif., today.
The Sooners (21-6-1) broke the scoreless tie in the fourth, plating two runs off of Mairee Mena's two-run double. It would be all OU needed but it extended its lead to four with runs in each the fourth and seventh.
Sharee Fonoti got a rally started in the team's final at bat. But, her two-out home run in the seventh was all Utah had in the tank, offensively.
Karina Cannon took the loss for Utah and fell to 5-3 on the year. She fanned five batters and only allowed one walk. However, the Sooner bats tagged Cannon for seven hits and three runs, all of them earned.
Lindsie Nielsen came on in relief in the seventh inning. She struck out two but allowed two hits and a run.
D.J. Mathis got the win for Oklahoma. She mowed down three Utes, walked two and allowed three hits and one earned run.
The Utes return to action on Thursday when they play Fresno State at 12:15 p.m.
