FRESNO, Calif.--The Utah softball team dropped its eighth straight game as it fell to No. 25 Long Beach State, 6-0, at the Clovis Auto Row Softball Classic on Friday afternoon. Utah (6-13) now faces No. 1 UCLA and No. 15 Fresno State tomorrow.
The Utes failed to get anything going offensively and have now left a total of nine runners on base in their first two games of the tournament. The 49ers took advantage of a Ute error in the second as they scored four runs, guided by a three-run bomb by Colleen Burdick. In the third, the 49ers added two more, which were unearned because of another Utah boot.
Melissa Oakes (0-4) started the game for Utah, but was relieved by fellow freshman Samantha Schroeder in the fourth. Oakes scattered six hits over three innings and allowed six runs (one earned), while Schroeder held Long Beach State to two hits through two innings of work.
Ivette Hernandez posted her second two-hit game of the day. Glennis Donnelly and Devina Quintero were the only other Utes to get a hit off 49er hurler Lindsey Knoff, who improves to 3-2 on the year.
