TAMPA, Fla. - The Auburn Tigers plated four unearned runs on four Utah errors in the first inning to run away with 9-1, five-inning win over the University of Utah softball team (9-7-1 overall) here in the first game of the USF Louisville Slugger Tournament.
"We struggled at the plate and we struggled with making the in-game adjustments that were necessary for us to make," said head coach Angie Jacobs. "This game was uncharacteristic for this team. I think that Auburn got to us and we started to make some mental errors in the field that this team typically doesn't make."
Karina Cannon got the start and falls to 2-3 on the year. She gave up eight hits, five earned runs and five walks. Cannon only fanned two Tiger batters. The Australian hurler was one of three Utes to bag a hit on the day. She was 1-for-2 at the plate with an RBI.
In addition to the four runs in the first, an RBI single by Sara Ghezzi in the second was Auburn's (9-9) first earned run of the game.
Another four RBI singles for Auburn in the bottom of the fifth ended the game with the eight-run rule.
The Tigers finished with eight hits on the afternoon.
The day was delayed due to storms moving through the bay area. Utah, however, will still play New Mexico State at 8 p.m. (EST).
