CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Sophomore third baseman Whitney Holm was 2-for-3 at the plate but the University of Utah softball team dropped 4-0 contest to Baylor on Friday in the second day of the Cathedral City Classic at the Big League Dreams Sports Park.
Utah (7-6) managed four hits and had five runners in scoring position but, unfortunately, could not push a run across the plate against the Bears.
Clements and pinch hitter Tori Medina both hit singles for the Utes as well.
Despite being held scoreless, Utah put together three scoring chances throughout the game.
In the first inning, Clements reached on a fielder's choice and Holm drew a walk before Jasey Jensen drew another walk to load the bases with two down in the frame. Unfortunately, BU got a strikeout to end the threat.
With one out, Clements reached base in the second inning after being hit by a pitch and took second after a Holm single through the left side, but Baylor got two consecutive outs to keep the Utes scoreless.
Medina started the seventh inning with a base hit to center field then Olson walked. Another single with two outs to the left side by Holm loaded the bases once again but Utah was unable to convert.
On the mound, Ashley Smuda got the start and allowed only one hit to the Bears through three innings but would eventually take her second loss of the season after allowing four earned runs with two strikeouts and one walk. The Scottsdale, Ariz., native is now 7-2 this season.
Baylor improved to 7-4 by scoring a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.
The Utes conclude their Cathedral City Classic schedule with a doubleheader tomorrow, beginning at 3 p.m. PT against Long Beach State then at 8 p.m. PT against UC Davis.
